According to sources on the ground in Raqqa there were 10 French jets carrying out the bombing runs and thus far over 30 bombs have been dropped.

Its still unclear if this is an expansion of the french operations in the fight against Raqqa or a retaliation to Friday night's attacks in Paris for which ISIS claimed responsibility.

France does have military assets in the region with them recently moving their aircraft carrier group the Charles Se Gaulle into position to strike targets in Syria and Iraq. It is most likely that French Rafele Jets took off from this air craft carrier to carry out today's strikes on Raqqa.

But it will also affect the refugees who are fleeing the violence in the middle east as well as those still living in Syria and Iraq.

There needs to be a coordinated response ASAP on multiple levels. There must be a coordinated response by intelligence agency to step up the collection of human intelligence on the ground in ISIS strongholds as well as across europe. This means some nations will have to set aside their differences in order to efficiently collect intelligence. The western agencies will need to work together with Russian FSB as well as Syrian and Iranian agencies. The Russians may have to act as a surrogate but they all need to make sure that no information is being held back if it regards ISIS.

The refugees need be properly vetted before being embedded in their new western communities. Legitimate refugees should not be turned away but extensive background checks need to be done on every refugee that enters Europe the U.S. and Canada. I believe background checks should go back 10 years in order to verify what these people have been doing prior to fleeing their home countries. Its not a matter of discrimination but a matter of verification.

Militarily we can not allow ISIS to remain comfortable. We must use everything in the power of the coalition to constantly pressure ISIS wherever they are. By allowing them to maintain their semi state status they have the ability and resources to plot and plan attacks globally. If the west is not commited to getting their hands dirty by confronting ISIS directly on the ground then they need to supply groups lile the Kurdish forces with whatever they need in order to continue putting pressure on ISIS at all times. Their vile ideology can't be defeat through military means alone but it is a very important part of the process by denying them safe haven to plot regroup and recruit.

Peshmerga Approach Frim Baaj and Tal Afar

Peshmerga and other Kurdish forces have launched a final assault on the city of Sinjar to dispell ISIS and cut off the roads leading from Mosul to Raqqa.

This will be a major blow to ISIS because Sinjar holds open their supply routes from Raqqa and other Syrian cities to Mosul. With Baiji and Tikrit now firmly under control of the Iraqi army and militias there is also no major roads leading from ISIS held Ramadi and Fallujah to Mosul.

Going forward ISIS is going to have to commit large forces out in the open to carry out an offensive large enough to take back territory to open these key routes otherwise they'll be limited to using less accessible desert routes to transfer supplies and fighters between their key cities.

This all ultimately boils down to the battles for Mosul and at some point Raqqa. Cutting key supply routes will make it very hard for ISIS leadership to glee these cities and even harder for them to send reinforcements when these battles take place.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5136131580429666387.post-25408610743587128782015-06-29T01:48:00.003-07:002015-06-29T01:48:44.290-07:00ISIS Attackers Hid In Turkish City

The map above made by Chuck Pfarrer illustrates the Situation in Kobane after the surprise attack by ISIS on Friday.

Two main dynamics of this attack are what strategic value does it have for ISIS and how were they able to coordinate such an attack without Turkish authorities being aware.

ISIS was dressed as YPG and FSA soldiers when they launched their assault. It would appear one strategy was to sow distrust between FSA and YPG. There were even some bogus rumors started by ISIS supporters that some of the FSA in kobane defected and joined ISIS during the assault. These rumors are unfounded and pure propaganda.

This attack was pure terrorism. ISIS came to murder as many civilians as they could to sow fear in the hearts of the citizens of Kobane. To show that they have the ability to strike at anytime and that Kurds will never be safe in their homes. This also tries to force the YPG to reposition troops and slow their onward trek into ISIS strongholds and eventually Raqqa itself.

ISIS will not succeed from a military standpoint but as terrorists many residents of Kobane will live in fear for the time being. The YPG and FSA as well as the coalition will become more determined to eradicate this vile enemy. Such an enemy that assaults a city just to murder children as they sleep can not be given any room to breath or any time to think. The fronts against ISIS must continue to expand and this horrific enemy must be defeated once and for all. They are not just an enemy of Kurds. They're the enemy of every human who wants to be free and secure.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5136131580429666387.post-49602803541908144892015-05-25T19:54:00.001-07:002015-05-25T19:54:16.775-07:00Iranian General Suleimani Blames US For Fall of Ramadi

Hatra was probably founded in the 3rd or 2nd century bc, under the Seleucid kingdom. It rose to prominence as the capital ofAraba, a small semiautonomous state under Parthian influence. Because of its strategic position along caravan trade routes, the town prospered and became an important religious centre. In the 1st and 2nd centuriesad, Hatra was ruled by a dynasty of Arabian princes whose written language was Aramaic, and it became known as Beit ʾElāhāʾ (“House of God”), a reference to the city’s numerous temples. Among the gods honoured were the Sumero-Akkadian godNergal, Hermes (Greek), Atargatis(Aramean), and al-Lāt and Shāmiyyah (Arabian), along with Shamash, the Mesopotamian sun god. Built in a circular plan of military tradition, Hatra was able to turn back many attacks, including sieges by Roman forces in 116/117 (led by the emperor Trajan) and 198/199 (under the emperor Septimius Severus). According to legend, al-Naḍīrah, the daughter of the king of Hatra, betrayed the city and permitted Shāpūr to conquer it, slay the king, and later marry her. (Tradition also holds that Shāpūr soon killed his bride, however.)

German archaeologists systematically studied the site between 1907 and 1911, and important Iraqi investigations were undertaken from the mid-20th century. Hatra is the best preserved and most informative example of a Parthian city. It is encircled by inner and outer walls nearly 4 miles (6.4 km) in circumference and supported by more than 160 towers. A temenos (temple enclosure) surrounds the principal sacred buildings in the city’s centre. The temples cover some 3 acres (1.2 hectares) and are dominated by the Great Temple, an enormous structure with vaults and columns that once rose to 100 feet (30 metres). Numerous sculptures and statues have also been discovered in the city. In 1985 Hatra was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Although a major restoration project was supported by the Iraqi government in the 1990s, the site was looted of a number of important artifacts during that time. Likewise, though it suffered no damage during the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq in 2003, a number of artifacts that had been excavated there came up missing when the Iraqi National Museum was plundered in the last days of the war.

Warplanes from Saudi Arabia and Arab allies on Thursday struck Iran-allied Houthi forces fighting to oust the country's Western-backed president. Saudi-owned al-Arabiya TV reported a ground offensive with troops from other Muslim states was being prepared.

Statement by NSC Spokesperson Bernadette Meehan on the Situation in Yemen

The United States strongly condemns ongoing military actions taken by the Houthis against the elected government of Yemen. These actions have caused widespread instability and chaos that threaten the safety and well-being of all Yemeni citizens.

The United States has been in close contact with President Hadi and our regional partners. In response to the deteriorating security situation, Saudi Arabia, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, and others will undertake military action to defend Saudi Arabia’s border and to protect Yemen’s legitimate government. As announced by GCC members earlier tonight, they are taking this action at the request of Yemeni President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

The United States coordinates closely with Saudi Arabia and our GCC partners on issues related to their security and our shared interests. In support of GCC actions to defend against Houthi violence, President Obama has authorized the provision of logistical and intelligence support to GCC-led military operations. While U.S. forces are not taking direct military action in Yemen in support of this effort, we are establishing a Joint Planning Cell with Saudi Arabia to coordinate U.S. military and intelligence support.

At the same time, the United States continues to closely monitor terrorist threats posed by al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula and will continue to take action as necessary to disrupt continuing, imminent threats to the United States and our citizens.

We strongly urge the Houthis to halt immediately their destabilizing military actions and return to negotiations as part of the political dialogue. The international community has spoken clearly through the UN Security Council and in other fora that the violent takeover of Yemen by an armed faction is unacceptable and that a legitimate political transition – long sought by the Yemeni people – can be accomplished only through political negotiations and a consensus agreement among all of the parties.

Statement by Saudi Ambassador Al-Jubeir on Military Operations in Yemen

March 25, 2015

(Washington, DC) -- Today, the Saudi Ambassador to the United States Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir hosted a press conference at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia and issued the following statement:

“Saudi Arabia has launched military operations in Yemen, as part of a coalition of over ten countries in response to a direct request from the legitimate government of Yemen. The operation will be limited in nature, and designed to protect the people of Yemen and its legitimate government from a takeover by the Houthis. A violent extremist militia. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries tried to facilitate a peaceful transition of government in Yemen, but the Houthis have continuously undercut the process by occupying territory and seizing weapons belonging to the government. In spite of repeated efforts by the GCC, G10 countries and the Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary General to seek a peaceful way to implement the GCC initiatives and the outcomes of the national dialogue that define the political transition in Yemen, the Houthis have reneged on every single agreement they have made and continue their quest to take over the country by violent means. They captured the capital city of Sana’a, they placed the legitimate president, prime minister and cabinet members under house arrest, they seized the security services and they continue to expand their occupation of the country.”

“In a letter dated March 7, 2015, President Hadi of Yemen made a request of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz to convene a conference under the auspices of the GCC to which all Yemeni political factions seeking to preserve security and stability in Yemen would be invited. The Houthis rejected this invitation and continued their violent onslaught in Yemen to the point where they were threatening to occupy the city of Aden, which had become the temporary capital for the legitimate government of President Hadi after he was able to escape from Sana’a. In a letter, dated March 24, 2015, President Hadi requested, based on the principle of self-defense, enshrined in Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, as well as in the Arab League charter’s collective defense mechanism, a request for immediate support – by all means necessary – including military intervention to protect Yemen and its people from the continued Houthi aggression and to support it in fighting al Qaeda and ISIL.”

“Based on the appeal from President Hadi, and based on the Kingdom’s responsibility to Yemen and its people, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, along with its allies within the GCC and outside the GCC, launched military operations in support of the people of Yemen and their legitimate government.”

“May God Almighty protect the brave soldiers and may He grant them success in their noble mission.”

The United States is deeply disturbed by reports that the Assad regime used chlorine as a weapon again, this time on March 16 in an attack on the town of Sarmin. We are looking very closely into this matter and considering next steps. While we cannot yet confirm details, if true, this would be only the latest tragic example of the Assad regime's atrocities against the Syrian people, which the entire international community must condemn.

What is clear is that the Assad regime continues to flout international standards and norms, including, if these latest allegations are verified, the Chemical Weapons Convention. The international community cannot turn a blind eye to such barbarism. As has been well documented, the Assad regime continues to terrorize the people of Syria through indiscriminate airstrikes, barrel bombings, arbitrary detention, torture, sexual violence, murder, and starvation. The Assad regime must be held accountable for such atrocious behavior.

A chemical weapons attack through the use of chlorine would not only be the latest example of the regime’s brutality towards the Syrian people, but also a direct violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2209, which specifically condemned the use of chlorine as a chemical weapon in Syria and made clear such a violation would have consequences. Any and all credible allegations of chemical weapons use, including the use of toxic industrial chemicals, must be investigated, and we continue to support the OPCW Fact Finding Mission in its continuing critical mission.

The Assad regime’s horrifying pattern of using chlorine as a chemical weapon against the Syrian people underscores the importance of investigating this allegation as quickly as possible, holding those who perpetrated such abhorrent acts in violation of international law accountable, and continuing to support the complete elimination of chemical weapons in this volatile region.

Kurdistan has long been the most friendly place outside of Israel for the U.S. in the middle east. We share core values of freedom and equality and could form a bond that could last for decades.

U.S. policy towards Kurdistan has always been grey. While we've always supported Kurdish security and upheld a solid relationship we still lack a formal policy towards their independence. We continue to support a United Iraq which is more and more becoming fantasy rather than reality.

Our allies in Baghdad play both sides of the field. They respective and appreciative when it suits them and they are in dire need of American support. At the same time they will coddle up to Iran and talk Ill of our support. While we continue to ship arms and advisors to Iraq and they are using American tanks and Howitzers they yell to the media that we are not doing enough.

The Iraqis even with their new prime minister are a sectarian mess. The army is not prepared or willing to stand on their own. So while they enjoy the benefits of U.S. arms, Intelligence and air power they still are divided on the ground by sectarianism with their Shia militias backed by Iranian forces and Hezbollah terrorists. Their own policy and government is so controlled by Iran now that they don't know how to speak for themselves. When they are embarrassed on the battlefield they say America isn't doing enough. When they have some rare success they say that it was thanks to Iran and that they don't need the U.S. .

While the Iraqis claim that Kurdistan is Iraqi territory they neglect to protect and secure it. They hold back tax revenue and salaries from Kurdish workers and they control the arms shipments sent to Kurdistan via Baghdad. Kurdish Forces have bled and sacrificed to secure Iraqi cities in the north. They've had their families destroyed and their women and children kidnapped and sold as slaves. Meanwhile as the Kurdish Forces secure territory and continue to defeat ISIS in the same cities that the Iraqis ran from, the Shia militias are threatening to waltz in and take control of these Kurdish towns. They are threatening to engage Kurdish Forces if they do not pull back to Erbil.

It's time the U.S. stand up for their only true allies in Iraq. The Kurds have shown over and over that they are capable of running a prosperous and free state. They're capable of defending their people from external enemies that fester right under the nose of the Iraqi government. They treat all of their citizens as equals and continue to maintain a bustling economy despite fighting a war for their survival.

The U.S. needs to wake up and support a free and independent Kurdistan. It's clear that they are our only real allies in Iraq. We could benefit tremendously from this relationship as could the Kurdish people. They've stood by our sides and assisted us in any way possible during our various engagements in the region. They stand strong in the face of terrorism and share our visions and values.

From northern Syria to northern Iraq the American people support Kurdistan! Let's do the right thing and support their independence.

Mosul residents are expecting a huge battle involving the international alliance’s air force — and perhaps US ground forces — to liberate the IS stronghold. The organization’s militants have been digging trenches, erecting a high wall and taking other measures that can no longer go unnoticed by Mosul citizens.

A Mosul resident who chose to use the pseudonym Sabah al-Ali told Al-Monitor, “For weeks, large vehicles have been working on digging a trench around the city.” He said that the trench is about 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide and over 1.5 meters (5 feet) deep, extending over long distances from the city's west and south, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the nearest inhabited area.

Ali said that digging such a huge trench is a massive project requiring laborious efforts. For that reason, IS agreed to pay a contractor $4,000 for each kilometer of trench.

An employee of Mosul’s municipality directorate told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity that IS is using the vehicles of the municipality's service departments to dig garrisons at the main entrances of the city and to plant visible explosive barrels on the roads.

These projects are being implemented not far from the international alliance’s air raids, which targeted several drilling vehicles on Feb. 15. The municipality employee said that an air raid destroyed his large drilling equipment, which IS had seized in February to dig garrisons in As-Sahaji, south of Mosul.

He said that a high wall had also appeared along Mosul's roadsides. The wall is made of cement blocks, which Iraqi security forces hid behind to take cover from the coalition’s airstrikes at Bawabat al-Sham, the western gateway to the city.

Eyewitnesses in Mosul said that IS formed a second defense line outside the city with the cement blocks, placing them about a kilometer from the trench. The wall appeared on both sides of the road leading to Mosul to obstruct cars, except in areas tightly controlled by IS.

IS is expecting a battle and is using all its capacities to prepare. Despite the intense shelling by the international coalition, IS continues to produce booby-trapped cars, bombs and explosive barrels in the Mosul industrial regions under its control. Moreover, IS' bombing of the city's entry points and main roads persist, so as to obstruct entry into Mosul.

Although the preparations are not secretive, few people in Mosul know their details, given the residents' constant fear. Still, residents have noticed other details that might seem insignificant to outsiders. For instance, IS members have begun to mask their faces while walking in the markets and punishing civilians in public, out of fear that the tables might turn on them.

What scares Mosul residents most is that they cannot leave the city. Mosul resident Ahmad Hamdani and his family have been trying to relocate to any region controlled by the Iraqi state for two weeks but to no avail.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5136131580429666387.post-16557065750655820362015-03-10T02:54:00.002-07:002015-03-10T02:54:36.990-07:00Peshmerga Take Out ISIS SVBIED With Milan Anti Tank Missiles (With English Translation Text)
